The same thing could be said about many of the stories in the Bible. If you take them in their literal sense, at their face value, they cannot possibly be true. But if you look for a deeper meaning, the underlying messages they convey, these stories will be richly rewarding in terms of basic truth and wisdom.
Take the creation tale in the Book of Genesis. It says the About estranged family world and everything in it was created in six days. The surface story cannot meet the requirements of our present day scientific knowledge. It is foolish to say the science can be cast aside in favor of what is believed to be divine revelation. Both can be saved if we see the Bible as using myth in its proper sense.
Centuries ago Galileo embarrassed the Church by showing that the earth revolves around the sun rather than vice versa. This statement seemed to contradict the story from the book of Joshua where the sun is described as stopping in its track while the Israelites finished a battle in victory.
